As a ‘sole practitioner,’ we have the distinct advantage of providing innovative architectural designs and associated services at a more competitive rate than other companies, whose day-to-day overheads often mean higher prices. Paul was born in Tokyo in a Japanese household; originally named YASUO OZAWA (康夫 小沢). His mother was Japanese, and his father was English.
Paul's inquisitive interest in buildings dates back to his early years. Lived in a traditional Japanese house, “Washitsu (和室)—Japanese-style rooms" called a "tatami room". Translated into English is a Japanese room with traditional tatami flooring. Washitsu usually have sliding doors (fusuma), rather than hinged doors, between rooms, as well as to the outside spaces.
Entrances called "Genkan" are traditional Japanese welcome entrance areas for a house, building, or even an apartment, resembling a combination of a porch and a doormat, but this should create a focal point to welcome guests to your home.
Paul's formal years in Japan helped his curiosity when he went to study architecture in the U.K. in 1994, especially about privacy, natural light, and protection from the elements with vistas views of external spaces, especially gardens, irrespective of the location or the size of the house/building. While working in other practices to gain his experience before setting up his own practice in 2011 in Horsham.
Recently went back to Japan to visit his family in Tokyo and Hiroshima, touring around Japan. Especially to visit the traditional beam and post Japanese timber houses as well as the family house on Etajima Island (the original family house is still owned by the family).
The experience is similar to staying in a "Ryokan" a traditional Japanese house, being in connection and harmony with the natural world, the design embraces natural daylight, sunlight and flexibility of space helped shape the underlying differences, between the two cultures, Japanese architecture is focused on flexibility, while Western architecture is based on permanence of spaces, hence, an “Englishman’s Home Is His Castle”.
